Chapter 10: The Next Assignment

Nick and Lazari turned to face Urijah who had waited patiently by the side of the pool until they returned. The kind, wise leader of the unicorns smiled and his soft eyes brimmed with fresh tears.

“Thank you Urijah,” said Nick. “As difficult as that was to witness, it was very enlightening to both of us.” Stepping up to the magnificent white unicorn, he hesitantly reached forward and touched his neck, hoping that he was not being too presumptuous. When the unicorn placed his muzzle on Nick’s shoulder, Nick could feel his body being infused with love. His hand stroked the white, velvet-like hair on Urijah’s neck.

“It is now time to send you on another difficult assignment,” said Urijah, slowly. “I hesitate only because of your youth. However, because you are a human, immortal though you are now, I believe you can acquire information that we might not be able to obtain in any other way. You alone can converse with the humans on earth and find out what they know.” He turned and started walking back through the garden, over the green bridge and past the pools of water lilies. Nick and Lazari followed closely behind.

Urijah stopped under a rose covered trellis and, turning toward them, he spoke once again. “Your first task will be to find Hasbadana’s training ground in the area called ‘The Black Hills.’ Portlas will take you there,” then he smiled. “And another friend will accompany you as well.”

As he said this, the loud, screeching call of a raptor split the silent night. The flapping of wings followed, and an instant later, an eagle descended like an arrow and landed gracefully at their feet.

“Gloforia,” exclaimed Nick with excitement. Nick dropped to his knees and stroked the white head of the eagle that he had befriended during his training. Gloforia had helped them escape from the Dark Kingdom.

“Hello my friend. It is good to be with you again,” said the eagle.

Nick looked up at Urijah, a broad smile brightening his face. “Is Gloforia coming with us?”

“If that meets with your approval. I thought she might prove to be helpful…eyes in the sky so to speak,” said Urijah with a smile, his eyes twinkling.

“I think it is a great idea,” said Nick enthusiastically.

Lazari, who was standing nobly beside Nick, shook his big, dark head up and down. “As do I,” he said.

Nick, Lazari, Portlas and Gloforia spent the next several hours meeting with the Council and receiving their instructions. It was determined that they would travel through the waterfall that covered the four corners of the earth to the land called ‘South Dakota.’ With the help of Portlas and Gloforia, they would secretly and silently observe the training of Hasbadana’s army. They were not to interfere, however. From their observations they were to ascertain how far along Hasbadana was with his campaign, how large an army he had assembled, and in what direction he planned to proceed.

In order to accomplish their mission, it would be necessary for Nick, Lazari and Portlas to remain under the spell of the invisible clover.
